Dalgona coffee, the newest favorite of coffee lovers, has recently taken social media by storm.
Now we had to create our own version with matcha, of course! Read on, if you are looking to switch up your regular morning matcha latte!
Do not let the elegant look trick you, it is actually pretty simple to make and you will only need one extra ingredient other than what you already have at home for your matcha latte.
The original recipe of dalgona coffee comes from South Korea and has recently conquered all social media platforms.
And yes! I can be totally made with matcha.
Dalgona coffee is a whipped coffee drink made by combining instant coffee, sugar and water. When using matcha, we have to use a nice little trick in order to get a similarly creamy-foamy drink.
We actually have 2 nice tricks up our sleeves: one is heavy cream, the other is egg whites!
Choose what works for you and make your own matcha dalgona.
A few notes for guaranteed success:
- If using heavy cream, make sure it is extra cold! That ensures a perfect whip.
- Egg whites are whipped above boiling water, so you basically cook them and you don't have to worry about "drinking" raw egg whites. If you want to be extra careful: soak eggs in warm water with a little bit of disinfectant for about 20 minutes.
Follow these simple steps and you can be sure to have an amazing matcha dalgona experience! If you decide to try it, let us know using the hashtag #mmatcha!
Ingredients (1 serving):
- 200 ml plant milk of your choice
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp M Matcha Premium or M Matcha Culinary
- 1/3 cup heavy cream (at least 30%) OR 2 raw egg whites
- ice cubes (optional)
Method:
Version #1 with heavy cream topping:
1. Whip (extra!) cold, high-fat heavy cream with sugar using an electric mixer. When the top of the cream starts to ripple, it is done, be sure not to overdo it.
2. Sift in matcha powder and mix until you have a nice, homogeneous green foam.
3. Place ice cubes into a glass, pour plant milk over it and add your matcha foam on top. Mix with a straw to merge the layers.
Version #2 with egg white topping:
1. In a pot, boil a small amount of water and place a heat-resistant (metal or glass) bowl on top. Add your egg whites and sugar into the bowl and whip it using an electric mixer.
2. After a few minutes, remove from the heat, sift in matcha powder and keep mixing until you have a nice, homogeneous green foam.
3. Place ice cubes into a glass, pour plant milk over it and add your matcha foam on top. Mix with a straw to merge the layers.
