Prior to making tea, soak chasen in warm water for a little while. This allows the whisk bristles to become softer and more flexible, thus preventing breakage during whisking.
Add matcha powder into a bowl and pour a little water over it. Using the bamboo whisk, start mixing it together, then whisk the tea briskly and firmly in an "M" or "W" motion until froth forms and there are no clumps. CLICK to watch video.
After you are done using it, rinse chasen with clean water (do not use any kind of cleaning product) and place it onto your bamboo whisk holder (kusenaoshi) or simply let it air dry with the bristles facing up. This helps to avoid its deformation, because over time, water causes the bristles of the bamboo whisk to straighten out, resembling their original form.
